A deeper look at Augmented Reality & some applications

What is augmented reality? Basically it is: a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world, thus providing a composite view.

I have dabbled with Virtual Reality and creating mini games to explore in, yet the Oculus Rift immerses you in a digital only realm without connection to the real world around you, Augmented Reality can connect the digital and real world using an app through the screen of your mobile phone. I found one teacher, Paul Hamilton, that really explained and turned me on to building my own AR projects. After a few tutorials on YouTube I was off to the races.

The first experiment was simply going to be a piece of artwork that my daughter drew around the age of 4. The tools I needed to make this work were:

    • The Image that would act as the foundation of the AR experience
    • An iPad to create the Animation to flow over that image [ Using Keynote ]
    • A program called – EyeJack – works with both iOS and Windows systems

    1. Download the Eyejack App for your iPhone or Android Device.

My next project will be in supermarkets, capturing the front of cereal boxes, pasta, etc and adding cool animation to them. Oh, a did some others using the Gary Vee website. [ CAUTION EXPLICIT CONTENT ]
